Naomi Campbell on Activism, Fashion, and Culture

In recent years, the Victoria and Albert Museum has enjoyed record-breaking success with retrospectives dedicated to legendary designers, such as the 2023/2024 “Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto” and 2019’s “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams.” However, never before has the museum dedicated an exhibition to a single model. Activist, philanthropist, and creative collaborator, and of course supermodel Naomi Campbell, pillar of the fashion industry and inspiration to many women globally is the first to receive this honor. As one of the most iconic supermodels of all time, she continually challenged the status quo, using her platform to advocate for diversity, representation, and female empowerment. Now, in the V&A, her legacy takes on a new form.

This exhibit isn’t just a celebration of Naomi Campbell’s modeling career but also a tribute to her role as a trailblazer for women, especially women of color, in an industry that has historically been exclusionary. Campbell’s journey to the top of the fashion world was nothing short of groundbreaking.

As the exhibit unfolds, viewers will see that Campbell's influence extends far beyond the runway. The V&A will shine a light on her contributions to organizations like the Black Girls Coalition and The Diversity Coalition, both of which aim to increase representation of black and minority models in the fashion industry. These organizations have been imperative in addressing the racial disparities that have long plagued fashion, and Campbell’s involvement has been key to their success. The museum will also spotlight Campbell’s current work with Arise Fashion Week, an annual event celebrating African fashion, and her global program, EMERGE, which provides the next generation of creatives with tools to succeed in the fashion industry.

This exhibition is more than just a fashion show; it’s a powerful statement about female agency, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality. Naomi Campbell’s legacy as a supermodel is undeniable, but her contributions to art, culture, and social justice make her a true trailblazer.
